Set in 2004 rural Oregon, two old friends reunite to solve a mystery righting a small town wrong, save a family member from jail time
and find some weed.
Freddy and Adam are alienated thirty-somethings vaguely aware the preceding generation has left them holding the proverbial bag. Forced to resolve a criminal investigation involving Freddy's younger sister, the two men embark on what ultimately becomes an off-kilter detective story littered with richly drawn eccentric characters.
Searching for Mary Jane is a full-length feature for theatrical release. It's an original adult comedy/mystery but ultimately it’s all about friendship (ala The Nice Guys, SuperBad, Sideways, Midnight Run). Nothing extreme or gross-out humor. It’s honest, fun storytelling.
Searching for Mary Jane is almost a road picture if the road never left town. It’s Hope and Crosby meet Pineapple Express.
Though this story retains an art-house sensibility, it is an episode from The Rockford Files at heart. As that show and other fares from the era proved, social commentary does not have to be esoteric or boring. This fact is lost on most independent films that more often than not include copious amounts of indirect chatter. Our story is bolstered by crisp dialog, frequent doses of humor, and constant dramatic conflict. Searching for Mary Jane is accessible, entertaining, and intelligent.
The script is complete. There is seed money.
